002: Love

The actual theme of the 100 Themes Challenge so far seems to be "Women perched on ledges and things." Ah well. Maybe by the time I'm done I'll actually be good at doing them.
This is Lady Amica, mother of Captain Drake (characters in
The Voyage to Ruin); the drawing actually came out of my writing session yetserday morning, when I learned some things about the lady, and her motives, that I hadn't known before. The abbreviated background is the pure result of my laziness in re: drawing backgrounds. Another thing to work on.
(That, incidentally, is why although I admire J.K. Rowling [for example] for her extensive notes, and all the time and thought she has clearly put into building her world, I don't believe her when she makes pronouncements about things that aren't in the books. Yes, of course, a writer always knows more about the characters than will fit in the actual story ... but on the other hand, something you
think is true of a character, a situation, an event, or any other aspect of the story, isn't
actually true until it's been written in the story itself. [Even if it's a scene that you later cut? Hmm, yes, I think so.] At least, that's how I've found it in my own writing. I am, however, the most helter-skelter of writers, plunging into my plots without even a plan, only the vaguest notion of what I'd like to happen ... so maybe I'm not the best authority. On the other hand, the stories always seem to work out in the end, even [and perhaps especially] when the characters do things I didn't expect, or act contrary to the way I'd been planning them to act. And you can clean up the little inconsistencies in the editing. But enough of this parenthetical now.)
Not sure what happened with the face on this one; I like it, but it's not how I usually draw the character. It reminds me of someone else's style; darned if I can think of whose, though.
Drawn with red col-erase on animation paper. You can still see the punched holes. Hehe.
I did this drawing yesterday, as a warm-up before getting into a tough character design problem I've been butting my head against all week. I'll have #003 later!
Wow - Drake's mother! I noticed that about the face as well... sort of reminds me of a few of the designs used in Disney's Hercules... or maybe it's just the temple in the background that makes me think that way!
